1. What gets installed?
This OnDemand product installs a Windows service on this computer. The service is used to connect to Microsoft Office SharePoint sites and provide reporting services. Quest does this so that your SharePoint sites can be accessed securely, within your domain, and behind your firewall. No data is transmitted beyond your firewall.

  2. How does it work?
The OnDemand product is a Microsoft Silverlight 3 application that talks to the Windows service created during the installation. The service communicates directly with your SharePoint servers and gathers list and document information for reporting purposes.

  3. How does the service query a SharePoint server?
The service retrieves information from SharePoint using the SharePoint Web Services feature. By using this capability, the OnDemand product is able to get information about the number, size, and type of documents stored on the site. If the site has sub-sites, they also will be included in the report. This process continues until no more sites can be found.

  4. Is an agent installed on the SharePoint server?
No. The OnDemand product does not need to install any agents, or require any configuration changes to your SharePoint servers. It uses the SharePoint Web Services capability of SharePoint to produce the data for the reports.

  5. Will I have to pay or subscribe to continue using this OnDemand product?
No. The OnDemand product is provided free of charge. Please see the License Agreement for a complete description of the terms of service.

  6. Which versions of SharePoint can I generate reports on?
This OnDemand product has been tested against the following:
    • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2
    • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 (Beta)

At this time Quest does not support Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite.

  7. How do the credentials I provide affect the report information I can collect?
If the credentials you provide are for a Site Collection administrator, then you can collect information from all sites and sub-sites from the Site Collection root URL downwards. By entering the Site Collection root URL, you can collect information in all sites and sub-sites automatically. If you enter a Site URL, then the information on that site and its sub-sites will be collected.

If you provide Site Owner credentials, you can collect information from that site and its sub-sites. The information in the sub-sites will be collected for you automatically.

If you provide credentials that are neither 'Owner' or 'Administrator', then you can only collect from that site. Even if the site has sub-sites that you can access, their information will not be automatically collected. You must collect it manually by creating another report.

Note: You must have some level of access to the site in order to run a report. If you have no access, you will receive an "Access Denied" message and you will not be able to proceed.

  8. How can I report on a secure SharePoint site?
Enter https:// before the site URL.

  9. Does any of the information retrieved get stored outside of my network in the 'Cloud'?
No. Information contained in the reports is only stored on your computer. The reports are stored in Silverlight Application Storage, which is only accessible to Silverlight applications downloaded from the same site and run locally.

If you reload the web page, the reports you see are those which you created and are available only to you. Another user logged onto your computer will not see these reports.

  10. Can other users see the report data I have collected if they log on to my computer?
No. The data stored in Silverlight Application Storage and is available only to you.

  11. Do the credentials I use get stored?
No. Only the last credentials used to create a report are stored in Silverlight Application Storage. This is available only to you. The password you provided is used securely by the service while the report data is being collected and then is removed.

  12. How do I completely remove the locally stored report data?
    1. Right-click anywhere in the application and click on Silverlight.
    2. When the Microsoft Silverlight Configuration dialog appears, click the Application Storage tab.
    3. In the list, find and click the web address http://sar.ondemand.quest.com .
    4. Click delete and confirm.
